Why I Named It 88

A Letter from Oscar, Founder of 88

When I set out to create 88, it wasn’t just about making something for dogs. It was about honouring something that’s been with us since the beginning—the bond. The kind that needs no words. The kind you feel in your bones. The kind you share with a dog.

I’ve always believed dogs aren’t just pets. They’re partners. Teachers. Soulmates. And I wanted to build something that lived up to that truth.

In my search for a name, I asked a simple question: what makes a dog… a dog? That curiosity led me deep into the science of evolution. And that’s where I found it—IFT88, a gene that played a crucial role in the transformation of wolves into the loyal companions we know today. It wasn’t just a scientific fact. It was a revelation. This bond we share isn’t just emotional—it’s in our DNA.

That number, 88, stayed with me. It was more than a nod to science. It had symmetry. Strength. Meaning. In many cultures, 8 symbolises infinity—two eights, side by side, speak to the unbreakable connection between human and canine. A full-circle kind of love. The kind that keeps evolving, just like we did together all those years ago.

So, I named the company 88. Not because it’s clever. But because it’s honest. It’s a mark of respect—for the journey we’ve shared and the future we’re still shaping together.

Everything we do at 88 is guided by that same reverence. No artificial anything. Just clean, natural treats that honour your dog like the family they are.

That’s our story. Now we want to hear yours.
