Lewis and Roscoe
Lewis Hamilton, F1 Champion
Lewis Hamilton, a man defined by the high-velocity, high-stakes world of Formula 1, often found his most profound stability in a quiet, four-legged companion. The story of Lewis and his bulldog, Roscoe, was not just about a dog and his owner; it was a decades-long chronicle of a partnership that navigated global travel, intense pressure, and profound loss, always rooted in unconditional love.
The genesis of their friendship began not on the track, but on a search engine. Lewis was looking for a rescue dog and found an online page featuring approximately a thousand bulldogs. He recounted the moment he saw a specific image of a puppy in 2013: an instant connection that required no second thought. “That’s him!” Lewis decided. Roscoe was immediately brought into the fold, and soon after, he was joined by a sister, a female bulldog named Coco. Roscoe and Coco became Lewis’s pack, offering an immediate sense of family and stability that was otherwise missing from his transient, jet-setting life. They were inseparable, with their joint Instagram account, @roscoelovescoco, proudly proclaiming their bond to over half a million followers.
From that moment, Roscoe’s life became a striking juxtaposition of the serene and the chaotic. He was an unprecedented figure in the Formula 1 paddock, often seen traveling on Lewis’s private jet and making himself comfortable in the exclusive confines of the Mercedes garage. While engineers wrestled with telemetry and strategy, Roscoe would famously be stretched out on the cool garage floor, often sound asleep, a silent, calming anchor amidst the roaring engine noise. These moments were the heartbeat of their relationship. Roscoe was by Lewis’s side for monumental career milestones, including his record 92nd career victory at the 2020 Portuguese Grand Prix. But Roscoe was a star in his own right. Embracing his dignified persona, Lewis launched Roscoe into a modelling career. The bulldog was an absolute professional, reportedly earning $700 a day for his gigs. Roscoe seemed to embrace the celebrity, with Lewis noting that his beloved companion loved the attention at auditions and happily accepted the required treats and pampering.
The glamour of the paddock, however, was balanced by periods of deep difficulty. The depth of Lewis's dedication was tested multiple times, beginning with the painful passing of Coco in 2020 due to a heart issue, an immense loss that cemented the reliance Roscoe and Lewis shared on one another. Roscoe’s own health struggles were also significant. Like many bulldogs, he suffered from severe breathing difficulties, chronic skin allergies, and limping due to joint pain. Lewis was unwilling to accept these ailments and undertook extensive research. This led to a profound act of care: in 2020, Lewis transitioned Roscoe to a fully plant-based diet of quinoa and vegetables. The results were dramatic. Lewis shared how Roscoe’s breathing issues vanished, his coat became softer, and his energy levels soared—he became, in Lewis's words, "like a puppy again." This change was the ultimate demonstration of Lewis viewing Roscoe as a partner whose health deserved the highest level of commitment. The ultimate test of their bond came years later, in Roscoe’s final days. When Roscoe suffered from pneumonia and was placed on life support, Lewis immediately canceled F1 professional obligations, including a Pirelli test and appearances at Milan Fashion Week. For four days, he stayed constantly by Roscoe’s side. Lewis described the final decision as the "hardest decision of my life," sharing that he held Roscoe in his arms as his soulmate passed away. The enduring legacy of their friendship is the blueprint they created for a truly equal and committed human-canine relationship—a sincere narrative of two souls who found perfect balance and boundless love in each other, leaving behind an inspiration for dog lovers worldwide.
